Liposuction

It's fairly easy for most young people to keep weight off, but as we become less active our metabolism slows. At this point most people adjust their diet. However, some people put on weight very easily or are genetically disposed to being large. Women often gain weight during motherhood, and weight gain can sneak up on just about anyone at times.

Liposuction takes weight off by removing unwanted fatty deposits without using invasive surgery. Sculpting of the body is achieved as unwanted fat cells are vacuumed away using a needle-like cannula.

Liposuction removes excess fat that has built up between the skin and muscle. Prior to undergoing liposuction, it’s important to maintain a healthy weight and also exercise. This will assist recovery by firming and toning the body, adding muscle where required.

Liposuction restores shape and contour to the body, and the procedure can be stand-alone or as part of a more extensive body shaping surgery. Liposuction removes fat but cellulite or loose skin can remain, and a consultation with Dr Valente will help you define your liposuction surgery goals.

Suitability for liposuction

Most people have areas of their body that are prone to carry extra weight in the form of fat. If left unattended, fatty build-up will increase. For some people, no amount of diet or exercise seems to shed the weight and liposuction is a chance to get back on track. Liposuction will shape and tighten a number of areas:

  • Neck
  • Breast
  • Waist and abdomen
  • Hips and thighs
  • Buttocks and lower back
  • Knees, ankles, calves
  • Upper arms

Liposuction targets any area of the body where fatty build-up requires removal. It’s safe and leaves little to no scarring in natural crease lines of the body. Liposuction is a valuable tool for losing weight and sculpting, especially when good health is the goal.

Does the weight stay off?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure, so your body will function as normal post-operation. This means that fat cells will continue to reproduce with regular weight gain. Areas of the body that have had liposuction contain fewer fat cells, so fat build-up is slowed dramatically. Continued weight gain will ultimately lead to enlarged fatty build-up once again. Fortunately, the liposuction procedure can be repeatedly used to safely remove excess fat.

Liposuction surgery

Surgical techniques are dependent on the needs of the patient, and liposuction should only be performed in a dedicated clinical environment. The best staff, equipment and surgeon can be relied on for good results, high industry standards and a growing reputation. Dr Valente is well known as a trusted and capable surgeon.

There are several ways liposuction can be performed. Tumescent liposuction injects an anaesthetic solution into fatty tissue which is then vacuumed through a cannula. Ultrasound and laser-assisted liposuction are also common. With these methods, the fat is first liquefied before being vacuumed.

Liposuction can be an outpatient procedure, with a return home on the day of the operation. If your liposuction is part of a broader surgery, you may be in hospital for a day or two extra. In some cases, a return visit for further liposuction is necessary.

Recovering from liposuction

There will be a degree of discomfort as you begin recovery from liposuction. Bruising, swelling and redness are all natural signs of physical healing, and these will subside during the following days. Compression bandages will need to be worn for a few days, possibly weeks, to control swelling and allow your body to heal.

Your surgery with Dr Valente is overseen until complete recovery. You will be provided with guidelines to keep the surgical site clean and free from infection. Your recovery from liposuction will be surprisingly fast, but it’s good to know Dr Valente is on hand just in case you need his advice.

Liposuction isn’t very invasive, yet the results can be remarkable and transforming. For a person in general good health with a drive to keep fit, liposuction offers real hope. The difference is palpable and attractive, with the potential of being the start to a fulfilling and healthy way of life.
