A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) will correct a sagging or protruding belly. Fat and skin can accumulate over time and in some cases a tummy tuck is the only means of achieving a slim and shapely waistline. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and tissue that diet and exercise can't budge. A fatty stomach can affect both women and men, and a tummy tuck is guaranteed to shed weight and help people get back in shape.
A tummy tuck does more than just remove excess skin. Liposuction is often part of a tummy tuck procedure, so fat and tissue can also be removed. Abdominal muscles that are weak can also be joined and tightened, creating a fitter and firmer physique. Tummy tucks are not suitable for all weighty people.
Those who have a large, firm belly with little loose skin won’t derive much benefit from a tummy tuck. Weight needs to be lost before the skin condition is examined. Younger skin is often more elastic and will return to shape, but older skin might hang or sag. At this point a tummy tuck can be considered.
Tummy tuck candidates
If fat around your middle gathers in bundles or is easily grabbed, you are probably a tummy tuck candidate. Fat can gather abundantly, with loose skin not far behind. A tummy tuck comes to the rescue when health and fitness become a priority in your life.
There are several types of tummy tucks. Your body shape will determine the most appropriate surgery for you. Dr Valente will discuss all tummy tuck options during your confidential and informative consultation. Tummy tuck surgeries include:
- Tummy tuck (Lipo-abdominoplasty): An incision is made from the belly button to the pubic hairline. This allows the muscles on the stomach wall to be tightened before skin is reattached.
- Partial tummy tuck (Mini-abdominoplasty): This procedure removes excess skin, but is less invasive than a full tummy tuck, as the abdominal wall doesn’t require surgery.
- Circumferential tummy tuck: Fat, tissue and skin can deposit on the hips and back along with the stomach. Circumferential abdominoplasty shapes and contours all sides of the body. A defined waistline is once again possible.
Tummy tucks invariably involve incision scars. These scars are hidden by natural body contours and are well concealed when wearing swimwear or light clothing. Incisions are most often closed with internal sutures that dissolve naturally, and the scar will fade over time to closely match your natural skin tone.
Care after tummy tuck surgery
Abdominoplasty is a common and safe elective surgery. You will be required to remain in hospital for a few days after the operation. Dr Valente and medical staff will be monitoring your progress during this time. Initial recovery is assisted by bandages or support garments that restrict movement while healing begins. Drains are often attached for removal of any unwanted fluids. The healing process is steady, and you will return home within a couple of days to continue with recovery.
Your recovery strategy needs to be implemented in advance. Once you have returned home your movements will be restricted or uncomfortable, and rest is the best way to recover at this point.
Simple alterations to regular activities could help with recovery from a tummy tuck. A chair can be kept in the bathroom and ice packs stored in the freezer. Light and comfortable clothing should be ready to wear, medications nearby and items such as remote controls, magazines and computers should all be easily accessed without strain or undue stretching.
Long term improvements
The change to your appearance is immediately noticeable after tummy tuck surgery. Recovery will continue and improvements gain permanence over time. There will be initial bruising, soreness or numbness, but these natural symptoms of recovery will diminish within a day or two.
As comfort and mobility return, the rewards of tummy tuck surgery are really appreciated, and work or regular activities can resume within a few weeks. Your progress is overseen all the way by Dr Valente to ensure recovery is complete and improvement is ongoing.
Achieving a slim, flat and contoured abdomen is the ideal with a tummy tuck. In fact, it is possible for almost everyone to dramatically improve their physical appearance. Your curves, stature and profile can all be enhanced by a tummy tuck. The surgery is very popular and all Dr Valente’s patients are provided with the confidence, inspiration and professionalism they deserve.
